Hi Shanon! Was hoping to pick your brain a bit more about being a Title I teacher-- I know you teach 3rd grade now after reading through your blog a bit. I went from being a 5th grade teacher for a couple of years to a kindergarten teacher to a substitute teacher and now just as of recently a full time Title I teacher at a school that hasn't really had Title I before. I have so many questions! How the stink do I begin to set up a classroom??? Is it really all that different from general education? DeleteSo sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I was in the same position as you, when I first got offered my Title I position, and it was very difficult to figure out what to do, how to do it, etc.
My best advice is to ask your principal exactly what they want from you. I spent my first 6-8 weeks going over data with administration and then figuring out which kids would benefit from the additional help the most. After creating a list of students I had to make a schedule that would allow me to see over 300 students. It was crazy but I spent a lot of time working around classroom schedules. In the end I ran my classroom as an intervention class. I would do remediation on skills that the students didn't get and I would also preview skill that the students hadn't learned yet. We spent a lot of time really digging in to one text so that they could see multiple ways of interacting with the same piece of text. We did rotations where the students could practice independently. And once a week I would do a mini lesson over what they would be learning.
It really took me into my 2nd year to get my class just the way I wanted it and to a point that it was really running the way I thought it should. It just depends on what your students need, what the administration wants to see, and how long you have to work with each group of students.
