Workshop Wednesday - Word Work

Good evening everyone. I hope you had a fabulous Wednesday! I must say, I had a great day today! It's amazing what a little positive reinforcement can do to change the mind set of a person (children and adults). To celebrate my wonderful Wednesday, and the fact that my husbands at work and I have a little time to blog, I'm linking up with Ideas by Jivey for the Workshop Wednesday linky.

I'm going to warn you in advance, I don't have any pictures of this activity but I will try to find them and get them posted so you can see the kids in action.

I love working with small groups and having the freedom to do a little bit more with them than the teachers can because of our numbers. One activity that I love, and that the kids love, is working on prefixes and suffixes in a hands on way. I started using this activity during my student teaching experience and I loved it so much that I just had to try it with my Title I students!

To practice making words with prefixes and suffixes, that we've already learned, I have the students work hands-on using plastic Easter eggs! On one half of the egg I will write a prefix or suffix and on the other half of the egg I will write a root word. The students get to create words in a hands on and engaging way.

I have the students record their words on a recording sheet; this year they will record their words in their interactive notebooks (woohoo!). During this activity I try really hard not to help. I love seeing the students work together to demonstrate their understanding of this concept and after they put together 2 or 3 words they are no longer asking for my help anyway.

I would love to hear about word work activities that you use in your classroom. Head over to Ideas by Jivey's linky party and share your favorite word work ideas and strategies!

    1. Thank you for hosting Jivey! I've mean meaning to link up for a while now and just find that I'm always so busy on Wednesdays that I never do. I'm so happy that I finally made time to do it today.

    1. Lori,
My students love this! I use it with 1st - 5th grade! It's such a great activity and it's so easy to create and can be used for years. Let me know if you get around to using it and how your students like it!
